Day 01: Arrival in Lhasa
Taking flight or train into Lhasa, your Tibetan guide & driver will wait you at the exit of Lhasa Airport/Railway holding your name board. You will receive a white Hada presentation, which is the Tibetan way of greeting extinguished guests from afar by giving you a white scarf, wishing you a safe & happy journey in Tibet. Afterwards transfer to hotel in downtown Lhasa. From Lhasa Railway, the ride is abt 20mins; From Lhasa Gongkar Airport, 1.5hrs via the new express way and Gala Shan tunnel. En route, you will have a good view of Yarlung Tsangpo River and Lhasa River. Guide will help you check in hotel and set up a picking up time for tomorrow before leave. You will have the rest of the day all to yourself, but
a good rest is highly suggested, as the first day’s well-rest is crucial for you to acclimatize the high altitude of Tibet.
Day 02: Lhasa
Sights: Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery, Norbulingka Park
About 8km west of central Lhasa, Drepung Monastery was once the world’s largest monasteries. The word Drepung literally translates as ‘rice heap’, a reference to the huge numbers of white monastic buildings that piled up on the hillside.
Approximately 5km north of central Lhasa, Sera Monastery was one of Lhasa’s two great Gelugpa monasteries, second only to Drepung. Between 3pm~5pm (not weekends), monk debating is usually held in Sera Monastery’s debating courtyard.
Norbulingka Park, literally ‘the Jewelled Park’, is a palace and surrounding park in western part of Lhasa, served as the summer palace of Dalai Lamas. Part of the ‘Historic Ensemble of Potala Palace’, Norbulingka Park is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was added as an extension of this Historic Ensemble in 2001. Norbulingka Park was built by the 7th Dalai Lama and served both as administrative centre and religious centre. It is a unique representation of Tibetan palace architecture.
Day 03: Lhasa
Sights: Potala Palace, ChagpoRi Rock Carvings, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Plaza
Lhasa’s cardinal landmark, Potala Palace is one of the great wonders of world architecture. Potala Palace is a structure of massive proportions, with over 1000 rooms, and an awe-inspiring place to visit. The complex of Potala Palace, comprising the White and Red Palaces with their ancillary buildings, is built on Red Mountain in the centre of Lhasa Valley, at an altitude of 3,700m.
ChagpoRi Rock Carvings, a hidden corner of Lhasa features over 5000 printed rock carvings that were created on the back side of Chagpo Ri Hill over the course of a millennium. Throughout the day pirgrims perform full body prostrations in front of ChagpoRi Rock Carvings, while stone-carvers at the far end of the courtyard contribute to a large chorten built entirely of the carvers’ mani stones.
Jokhang Temple is the most revered religious structure in Tibet, thick with the smell of yak butter, the murmur of mantras and the shuffling of pilgrims. In front of the entrance to Jokhang is a forecourt that is perpetually crowded with pilgrims polishing the flagstones with pilgrim prostrations all year long.
Barkhor Plaza, a quadrangle of streets that surrounds Jokhang Temple at Lhasa Old Town. Barkhor Plaza is an area unrivalled in Tibet for its fascinating combination of sacred significance and push-and-shove market economics. Barkhor Plaza is both the spiritual heart of the Holy City Lhasa and the main shopping district for Tibetans.
Day 04: Departure from Lhasa
Your guide & driver will collect you from your hotel then transfer to Lhasa Airport/Railway according to your travel plan. Hope this short 4-Day Lhasa City Classic Tour gives you a nice memory of Tibet and being an introducer of a future in-depth Tibet tour.
